Happy New Year 2016

As 2016 begins, we encourage you to take care of your dental health. This is the time to schedule appointments for your continuing care. See our hygienists for a cleaning and have our dentists perform an exam. Put together a plan for any work that needs to be done.

How Old Are Your Toothbrushes?

The American Dental Association recommends that toothbrushes and electric toothbrush heads should be replaced every 3-4 months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Fraying bristles are not as effective at reducing plaque and can increase your risk of decay.

You should also change your toothbrush if you have been sick or had a cold sore. Germs can hide in the bristles of your brush and make you sick again.

How Is Your Diet?

What you eat and drink affects your oral health. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to improve your immune system and reduce your likelihood of periodontal disease. Crisp vegetables and fruits will help to scrape away plaque and keep your gums healthy. Choose water over sugary soft drinks and coffees or teas.

Stop Smoking

Tobacco in all its forms increases the risk for oral cancers, causes tooth discoloration, increases the risk for cavities and for gum recession. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, smokers are twice as likely to lose their teeth than non-smokers.

Brush Twice a Day and Floss Once a Day

By brushing and flossing you are getting rid of the bacteria and plaque that causes decay. Flossing removes food and plaque between the teeth and under the gumline. Brushing alone cannot remove all plaque, so break out that floss this year and try to floss once a day!

Call to make your appointment now, and let your dentist and the team at Library Park Dental help you improve your smile this year!
